La oss sette i gang.

How I Evaluate Product Design Tools

Core functionality comes first: I look for tools that can draw and edit vector-based screens and link them into clickable, navigable prototypes. From there, I check for standout features like design token management. Then I consider pricing fairness and onboarding ease.

Core Functionality (Table Stakes For This List)

When I'm selecting tools for my list, I score each one on a scale from 0 (does not offer the functionality) to 5 (excels in this area) for each core functionality listed below. I then convert the total into a percentage to help assess each tool's overall fit, with extra weight on any functionalities I've deemed essential.

  • Vector-Based Design Editing (Essential): I check whether the tool supports full path editing, boolean operations, and precise layout control for building production-ready screens.
  • Interactive Prototyping (Essential): Tools earn higher marks when they let you build flows with overlays, conditional logic, and transitions rather than just basic screen-to-screen links.
  • Reusable Component Libraries: I look for shared, team-wide libraries where component updates propagate across files, not just copy-paste duplication within a single project.
  • Real-Time Collaboration: Whether two designers or twenty are in a file, I evaluate how well the tool handles live co-editing, cursor presence, and inline commenting.
  • Developer Handoff Specs: I check for inspectable specs that surface measurements, style attributes, and exportable assets engineers can grab without pinging the design team.
  • Version History Tracking: Named save points and the ability to restore or compare past versions matter more to me than a simple undo stack or single-save approach.

Once I have a list of tools that meet the criteria, I consider what sets each platform apart.

Differentiating Factors (What Sets Vendors Apart)

Here's how I compare and contrast different vendors:

Standout Features

Auto layout and constraints separate good design tools from great ones. I evaluate how well components reflow when content changes—like a card expanding for longer text—without forcing manual fixes. Dev mode tooling matters just as much. I check whether engineers get usable code snippets and measurements in a dedicated view, not buried in the design canvas. I also look for design token management, since centralized variables for color, spacing, and typography keep multi-platform teams aligned without drift between design files and production code.

Beyond Features

I evaluate how easily non-designers can onboard—PMs and engineers who just need to comment or inspect files shouldn't require paid seats or hours of training. Pricing models matter too, especially whether a tool charges per seat or by usage, since a ten-person design team sharing files with forty stakeholders can get expensive fast. I also check for native integrations with tools like Jira or Linear, because traceability between design work and roadmap items breaks down when teams rely on manual links or copy-pasted URLs.

La oss sette i gang.
